Curling Glitters? A Rant.

The other day I reviewed Sea Lore's newest Line, Triton's Daughters. I experienced NO curling glitters at all and stated such in my post here. This post isn't strictly about Sea Lore, but I'm going to use them as an example.

Apparently, though, there are some people who are going on and on about "curling glitters" when they must not truly know what that means. Now, let me just state for the record that I am not affiliated in any way with Sea Lore or the creator. But this isn't the first indie polish that I've seen people start something about.

I DO realize there are some horrible indie polishes out there that are nothing but crap in a bottle. And believe me I would definitely tell you if I got a hold of one of those. I'm pretty sure they know not to send them to me for review because I would skewer them. And thankfully I've done my research for the most part on the many MANY indies I buy so I haven't gotten a real "bottle o' crap" yet.

But for crying out loud, can't we just leave the ones that ARE good alone and stop taking it out on them for the indie polish makers who 1) have crappy CS and 2) toss crap in a bottle of base and sell it as good? What purpose does it serve? I'm trying to do honest reviews and give HONEST opinions of formula, wear, CS, etc. of the indies I have so that you guys can avoid the crap. And really, what's the point if people are going to ignore and start badmouthing the actual GOOD ones?

I said I was going to use Sea Lore as an example - because it's just the most recent example of this. She tested the glitters in the Triton's Daughters line for FOUR months. How many others do you know who test their glitters for that long? And I experienced NO curling glitters. At all. With any of them.

Here's a photo of Alana I posted earlier. Do you see ANY curling glitters? What you see are glitters that are well suspended in the base allowing them to "float" and catch the light in many ways. This is DESIRABLE. The glitters laid perfectly flat and everything was smooth with a coat of Gelous.

And here's a photo of Adella that I posted. Same thing.

These are extreme closeup shots. None of these glitter pieces are curling. They ARE catching the light though. That's what gives it interest both up close and from a normal distance. But this photo is NOT what you see when you're wearing it. At a normal distance you just get the depth and interest and play of light. Here is a photo of Adella (on the ring finger) at a "normal" distance. No curling glitters. These are not extra large glitter pieces!

I realize that people don't want to pay $7 to $16 for a bottle of indie polish that is crap. But because there are some out there who do that doesn't mean people need to give the good ones a hard time over non-issues. Let's support the good ones or they will all go away. I certainly don't want THAT.

Oh and for those who don't know the difference?

Scrangie has a great photo of curling glitter in her post here. And it's not even an INDIE!

Scrangie's post here.

And "taco glitter" is just what it sounds like. The larger glitter pieces curl into a taco shape.

So that's my rant. There are enough problems in the nail polish world, especially with indies, that I would think people wouldn't want to stir up things that aren't a problem. But what do I know?

I DO know that I have fun with my blog, which is the reason I do it. I love my readers and I know they trust me to tell them the truth, both when there IS a real issue and when there isn't.

If you enjoyed this post, please take a second to "like" it! Thanks!

  2. Very well said Sheila!!!! I'm not sure why people feel they need to slam good indie brands in their quest to dominate the nail polish community with their exposés and 'wisdom'. If you're going to criticize something, do your research and homework, and then let's discuss this as adults.

  5. You are the voice of reason and again another grant post not rant

  6. I haven't read people going off about Sea Lore's glitter, but I see no curling glitters on those pics! So I think it's nice with posts like this one to get things cleared up!

  7. Thank you. I really enjoy your blog for its honest reviews. The fact that you use pictorial evidence to back up the "no curling" glitter in Sea Lore is very helpful. I wish more people would take the time to investigate indie lines rather than slap them with the crappy CS, bad glitter brush.

  8. Thank you, people are getting SO FREAKING WHINY about even the tiniest bit of curling. It has been getting on my nerves a LOT. What is worse than curling glitter?! Everything: bleeding glitter, disintegrating glitter, completely and utterly curled up glitter, bad CS, sinking to the point where you can't shake it up any more, discoloration over time, etc.

  9. I can't figure out how to Like it, but I do in fact love it! I completely agree.

  10. I think you make a good point, and I appreciate you taking the time to explain things. However, I feel like the bigger hexes that have small bits of the edges coming up fall into the "curling" category, but I think that's wrong based on your description. Personally, I don't like to feel little edges that aren't staying down with 2+ layers of topcoat. So, seeing your pics, I would shy away from it based on my preference. However, bashing an indie brand is a bit much, and I wish people could go "huh, doesn't look like my kinda glitter" and move on.

    1. Oops, meant to say...

I think I'm categorizing wrong based on your description.

    2. And THAT is the way it should be. If it's not for you, move on and stop stirring up crap! LOL! Thank you for that reasonable response! ♥

    3. Oh and the closeup shots are a bit deceiving because all of the glitters are SMALL. And I only used one coat of gelous to make it perfectly smooth. And I meant "you" in general not YOU specifically. ♥

  14. I do agree with what you said in your post. Thank you for that...however perhaps the pictures you referred to are a little confusing. IMHO the glitters "appear" to be curling. I think it might be how people see the pictures. Are they floating or are they curling?
Let me say I have not seen in person or applied any of her polishes, nor do I own any.
This is just me looking at two pictures and understanding how some people could be a tad confused.
Always remember that people do have the freedom of speach however, they should always remember to tell the truth and don't forget you could hurt someone's business.
    Just my opinion!

    1. Well that's sort of what I think my "job" is...for the poeple who don't have the polishes themselves, I give my honest review/opinion. So if they're worried about "curling glitter" I can tell them that they are perfectly smooth and one coat of gelous makes it totally smooth to the touch. And they can judge from the photos whether that "look" is something they like or don't like and make their own buying decision. I agree, everyone IS entitled to their own opinions and to speak them and air their concerns. But to purposely hurt someone else's business? Makes me wonder what the motive is.

  15. I just have to say.... I LOVE your blog! I've been following it for a few months now and you have taught me so much about the lacquer world. I've only been obsesssing about polish since February....and that's only because of Pinterest. You can rant away anytime you want to. You are very informative and hysterical all rolled into one. "Crap in a bottle" LOVE IT !!!

  16. I wasn't feeling well yesterday and was sort of "in a mood" so after I wrote this post I thought OH NO - I bet I started more drama and I hate drama. But reading all of your comments makes me feel much better! THANK YOU ALL!

  17. As an indie, I appreciate this post.

  18. Perfect! This drama over reflective curling gets on my last nerve. IT'S AN OPTICAL ILLUSION, PEOPLE. Thank you for calling out the nail polish drama queens who are obviously out to ruin businesses.

  20. Thank you! This is such a great post and very informative! I hate when bloggers attack something they think they "know" about without actually doing the research.

  22. Great post! I wish everyone could read it. It should be made into a public service announcement on nail forums and such! Ive been working on a line of polish for a few months now and really want to make sure my product is the best quality I can offer, so I won't be releasing it for another few months. With all the craziness, I'm actually a bit nervous about it and was considering including "profile" photos to help avoid anyone from jumping to conclusions based on one photo.

  23. Thank you for this post. It's kind of sad that people are afraid of starting their own indie business because of evil flying monkeys on the interwebs. Your nails are *gorgeous*!

  24. I was just thinking about getting into the polish business myself and if I felt something was crap I'm a bottle I definitely wouldn't sell it. That's just mean and selfish for someone to do. Glad I stumbled upon this. I'll be sure to do really good research before I make anything.

  25. I did a similar post about curling glitter in NON Indie polish a while ago too. I hate the fact that some people will go crazy and flame Indie maker's but it's ok if Color Club has some. I won't post my link here because I think it's rude to post your blog on other blogs but if you would like to read it Sheila let me know and I will pm it to you on FB :)

  26. That curling glitter pic makes me feel so queasy... yikes! I can see how some of the edges of the glitter curl up a bit and why people might think Sea Lore has curling glitter though. Thank you for the photos!
