Nail Polish Storage Solutions?

I've thought about this a LOT. I've considered a Helmer, a Melmer, various other drawer solutions, beauty salon display racks and on and on and on.

Every time I come close to just biting the bullet and picking one, I think "Hey I should just build something!"

So I've decided to do that. For less than $20 I bought enough 1 x 2" 8 foot (because my lumber yard didn't have 1 x 3"s or 10 foot boards) pine boards to build three shelving units.

One 48W x 59H and two 30W x 59H.  Had my man not borrowed my table saw (and had I not been too lazy to haul it back over to my garage) I *might* have just bought a sheet of MDF and ripped the boards. Even cheaper!

Anyway, I started on the larger one this afternoon. My tools...

All squared up, sanded, glued and nailed...I'm not using a backer because I'm attaching it directly to the wall.

And because it's just pine and not better grade, I'm priming...

All painted and ready to be hung on the wall. I've located the studs but I just do NOT have the energy left in my tired old body to hang it tonight because I know if I did, I'd feel compelled to start putting polishes on it, my OCD would kick in and I'd never go to bed.

And what does my mani look like after all of this?  Well I've scrubbed until my hands are raw and can't seem to get all the paint off of them. I'm actually wearing Megan Miller Velvet Lounge, which is a vampy deep purple and other than all the black paint everywhere, it still looks pretty good! It's actually more purple and less black, but I will show that to you when I blog about it. I'm too tired to mess with the lighting to show it off properly now.

Tomorrow, I hang it and throw together the other two units which will hang on either side of the window of the wall to the right.

I think this will work!

What do you think? How do you store your polishes?

  1. great idea!!! i need to do one of this too!

  2. That's really cool. Any idea how many bottles it will hold?

    1. I figured the three units should hold around 1300. But I think more. That unit will probably hold around 500 and the bottom shelf will be for acetone and such...

  3. Wow, I can't wait to see how you arrange your polish! So space efficient too :)

  4. I have the same problem. Thank you for such a wonderful idea!

  5. Awesome! I can't wait to see the finished product :)

  6. Good job making, it's probably the best storage system, on display to see all the polishes at once. Can't wait to see the pictures with all the polishes lined up

  7. I'm just amazed at all of that work you did and your nails are pretty much intact! That's awesome!

  8. Cool can't wait to see it up and full. I have a helmer as I don't have the wall space :0) xxxJoolsxxx

  9. Wow. That is really nice. I am going to be a building nerd and ask you weird questions now. Such as, did you just use nails on every shelf to attach it to the side bars? How will you attach it to the wall? I know these things are not as easy as they look but I would really like to try to make a shelf like yours. I am really impressed with your skills!

    1. I used wood glue and a pneumatic brad nailer (and a builders' square) to attach everything and then I reinforced with screws on the 4 corners. The shelves are sturdy enough without screws. I attached to the wall into the studs right through the top and bottom on both sides with 3 inch screws.

  10. Thanks. I don't know if I can make one of these or not. But like I said, I am very impressed with your power tool skills and ability to still have all your nails in place after building something.

  11. You might want to consider putting hinges on several of the same shelving units so they would not take up so much wall space regularly but could be swung sideways to "open up" and show more shelves of polishes. In other words, you would have two or even three units hinged together within just a single unit's wall space.
As they say, "Go girl!" or, "better you than me!"
Doesn't looking at all those bottles give you a "high" so you can't do anything at all? That's the effect it has on me to see lots of bottles of colors, "Wheee!"
