Dior Nuit 1947 - Swatches and Comparison with Chanel Rouge Noir

Nothing to Disclose
*These products may NOT be Cruelty Free

Dior Nuit 1947 (#970)
from the Rouge Dior Collection for Autumn 2013
(Comparison with Chanel Rouge Noir #18 at the end.)

Continued after the jump...

Dior Nuit 1947 is an intensely vampy purple red jelly/crelly polish. Formula is amazing. The first coat goes on streaky, as all jellies, but the second coat works its magic. The "hidden shimmer" for which Dior is famous comes out to play in the sun, but it not visible on the nail in most lighting. Two coats and no top coat for the photos.

Artificial lighting...

Indirect natural lighting...

Full sunlight...

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

So, how does it compare to Chanel Rouge Noir #18? Well let's take a look!

As you can see from the bottle shot, they're not 100% dupes. The Chanel is a brown-toned vampy red while the Dior is more of a purple-toned vampy red...in the bottle. But how are they on the nail? Two coats of each with no top coat.

Artificial lighting...

Full sunlight...

In the extreme close-up in just the right artificial light, you can definitely tell that the Chanel is lighter but honestly I'm hard-pressed to tell the difference in most lighting and certainly not at arm's length.

The Dior formula is a smidge "creamier" but not much. Formulas are comparable but if I had to pick, I'd say the Dior has a slightly better/easier formula. I prefer the Chanel brush though - it's thin while the Dior brush is wide and beveled. I do love the Dior brush, but not as much as the control I get in the cuticle area with the Chanel brush. The Dior brush is easier at the sides though. So it's a toss up.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

So what do you think? Can you tell the difference? Is it a big enough difference to keep you from owning both?

Dior polishes are available at Dior.com and department stores nationwide and retail for $24 for 0.33 ounce bottles. This collection was just recently released so if your counter doesn't have it, they should soon.

  1. Absolutely gorgeous!! And you captured the hidden shimmer! I like them both but since I have the Dior I probably won't get the Chanel. Thanks :)

  2. They look close enough to me. :) I don't have either, but I have Zoya Casey (waiting for colder weather to try her). It looks fairly close to both of these. I hope so!

  4. I get along with both brushes, but however I prefer the one from Chanel.
After I picked up my Nuits 1947, I noted that it has some shy shimmer, which is only visible in sunlight, which might be the biggest difference between 1947 and Chanel Rouge Noir.

  6. I just swatched both of them side by side at the counter yesterday and I have to say that I prefer the Dior formula wise and I love the brush - application was much easier for me !
I heard that Nuit 1947 has been re released now with the new gel effect polish collection. Do you have it yet ? Could you compare it to this one ? They don't have it yet in the stores where I live and I'm wondering whether I should wait for the new gel effect formula of Nuit 1947 or buy this one NOW. I definitely WANT this shade ;-)
    Thanks

  8. I saw it when I picked up a few of the others and it honestly looked exactly the same. The brushes are a bit different in these new gel effect formula polishes. Still wide and flat, but not beveled and fat now. I haven't wear-tested the new formula yet but it does seem to be shinier - so far I've only worn the new formula of Incognito. I loved the old formula though so I'm happy with that one and won't re-purchase it in the new formula unless I notice a huge difference in the others I got on Friday.

  9. Thank you so much for answering ! I hope the new polishes arrive soon to the shops here because they look amazing !!! I have another question regarding Dior polishes in general:
I read in a few blogs, mainly French speaking, that the Dior polishes are great in the beginning but after a while the formula becomes so thick and clumpy, practically unusable...
As I only bought my first Dior polishes in the last few weeks, I don't know about that.
What's your experience with your older Dior polishes ? I mean, if you have just a few polishes and you use them up, then it's not a problem but if you're a collector and you pay so much for a Dior polish, you would expect to be able to use it again 6 months later, right ???

    1. I have over 75 Diors and so far, I haven't had any issues with any of them. Some are quite old and still no issues. I did have a few friends who had one thicken up on them, not sure if it was the same one/shade for all of them or not. But it's never happened to me and I checked all of mine when I heard about it. Even the ones in the really old round bottles are still good.
