Weekend Bits and Bobs: March 2, 2014 - The Oscars, A New Indie and My Favorite Mani of the Week

Nothing to Disclose

Good morning! Sorry I missed last weekend...sinus infections and just life in general happened. Lost a dear, sweet friend this week - makes me reflective and melancholy.

The 86th Annual Academy Awards is tonight and I find myself less than excited. I remember as a kid I looked so forward to it...seeing all the stars dressed to the nines, wondering who would win, in awe at the glitz and glam, trying to imagine a life that seemed so far removed from my reality, trying to wrap my brain around a "bigger picture" of the world. And now? Wondering if things have really changed or if it's just me who's changed.

Continued after the jump...

I saw a BuzzFeed that got me thinking, though. Someone named Kate Aurthur ranked all 85 Best Picture winners and yeah, I didn't agree with much she had to say. But several things she said did make me wonder. For instance: About The Lost Weekend (1945) she said "How do you judge something in 2014 that has aged so poorly, but was provocative and brave at the time?" and about Mrs. Miniver (1942) she said "So it’s hard to judge the movie now on the usual merits."

I don't really get that. I guess I'd never really thought people would try to judge a movie made in 1942 based on 2014 standards, thoughts or ideals. Why? It just never occurred to me to even attempt that. She pans Gentleman's Agreement (1945), which is one of my top 5 all-time favorite movies, based on that and it's just not reasonable to me...not possible. Or maybe (and it's extremely likely) I am the weird one. When I watch a movie made in 1947, without even thinking about it I watch from the perspective of someone in 1947. I thought everyone did that. I was wrong. I'm transported back to that time. These writers, directors, actors could not see into the future and looking back on these masterpieces trying to judge them based on everything that's gone on SINCE then is just a ridiculous idea to me.

It DOES explain one thing that has always bothered me though...why some of these fantastic movies don't get enough credit by these so-called "critics" of today.

Enough of that though. I'll watch at least some of the Oscar show tonight if only for Ellen and the In Memoriam segment. And to root for Judi Dench.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I got in about 65 polishes for review this week. And I was already behind! But I spent yesterday swatching my lil fingers off because some of these polishes are just stunning and I can't wait to show you!

My favorite mani of the week (or two weeks this time actually) was the one I did for #LLadoration...

It's my favorite color combo and the violet flake polish is an Elevation Polish One-of-a-Kind that was a sweet gift.

And lastly, I have a brand smacking NEW indie brand to show you from a sweetheart in Israel called Superficially Colorful Lacquer. She's been testing and perfecting for way over a year and she has some really fantastic polishes. She opens shop TOMORROW, March 3, 2014 and while I don't have all my photos cropped to post for you yet, you really can't go wrong with anything in her shop. You can find her at Superficially Colorful here. She will have her store stocked sometime tomorrow and you can get more information on her blog's Facebook page: Superficially Colorful on Facebook.

Here's a sneak peek of one of them: Giggly (it's a thermal and I didn't need to stick my hand in a bowl of ice water to make this happen!)

*Note: These are not the bottles. She has brand new bottles with cute boxes.

Have a great week!!!

  1. I agree about the Oscars, these days I watch it just to see the outfits. Your manis are spectacular, as always!

  2. I have to agree with you two about the Oscar. Nothing else to see there anyway...
And I totally LOVE your adoration mani. These colors are so you!!!
About the rest of the post... well, I am still trying to inhale-exhale slowly enough to keep me from hyperventilation... Your words and swatch are just so amazing I cannot believe I have anything to do with them at all!!! <3

  3. We can be weird together then, because I try to watch 40s films with a 40s perspective too. I've never been much for the Oscars though. I'll just catch a recap later. :)

  4. I love 1940's films and I think people who were given a sense of history as children can put themselves into a film as you describe. I also feel that there is a lot of depth and maturity in these classics. Anyone who believes that today is the only time that matters and that the past has no relevance for the present is either self-absorbed or a moron. And that thermal is just gorgeous.
