Valentine's Day, Dodge Ball and Life...

I am a reformed Valentine's Day whiner. You know the type...nothing is "enough" or the right thing. "But if he really CARED, he would know what to do! Doesn't he know he's supposed to make me feel special today?"

OMGosh I wish I could go back in time and throttle my former self!

Valentine's Day, much like life, is what YOU make it. Setting expectations so high that not even a psychic superhero with a penchant for roses and love songs would have a chance is just silly and childish.

Life is what you make of it. If you stand still, oblivious to what's going on around you, it will knock you on your keister or worse - just pass you by completely.

Sort of reminds me of dodge ball. Remember that masochistic exercise in grade school? Well turns out, it's a pretty good representation of life in general. If you curl up in a ball in the corner of the gym, you're going to get bombarded with those dreaded rubber balls filled so full they sting like a mutha! Show weakness and you're automatically a target. So stand up. Start moving. Pay attention to what's going on around you. Dodge the problems. Be evasive. Be on the offense and not the defense. Those kids with the balls and that gleam in their eyes chucking that ball at you as hard as they can are nothing compared to what life throws at you on a daily basis. So get your butt in the game and decide your own outcome.

Same with Valentine's Day. You want something special? Go get it! You want your guy to get it FOR you? Either TELL HIM or find a psychic superhero with a penchant for flowers and love songs. Or better yet...find a guy who makes you feel special and loved every day of the year.

As for me? Well if he got me a sappy card, I'm good! (he did - I saw the receipt from Walmart. ♥) Today will be just like any other day for us, which is plenty good for me because I know he loves me and the feeling is mutual. He shows me a 1000 ways every day.

I wish for you that kind of freedom from Valentine's Day - or at the very least, a psychic superhero.

  1. Very well-worded and wise, Sheila. This year I didn't sit around wondering what he would do for me. Instead, I made it special for him and the smile on his face and blush on his cheeks made my day :)

Happy Valentine's Day to you and yours :)

  2. Brilliant, Sheila! Just brilliant. *clapping*

  3. Happy Valentines Day, my wonderful friend!

  4. I couldn't agree more! I'm happy that you have someone that shows you he loves you every day - that's so much more important than one silly day during the year. ♥

  5. Oh Sheila, again you spoke from my heart. In Switzerland Valentines Day was nothing big until about two decades ago. And then flower shops, chocolate manufacturers and jewelers discovered the marketing potential of this day. And significant others who might have been oblivious of an anniversary got a way out of escaping "the Look". We are now reminded for weeks across the globe that the day is approaching and gifts should be purchased. As for M and me? We are the same like you, he carries me on his hands since years every day, no gift can compensate for that and I love to surprise him equally any day of the year. Conclusion: we are just so lucky ducks!!!

  6. Funny how we sometimes think that loving us should should confer the power to read our minds. Sometimes we're lucky enough figure out that just ain't so.
