So I'm a cheater. A big, fat CHEATER! I own it. Today I have Day 5 for The Digit-al Dozen AND the Things that Fly prompt for the 40 Great Nail Art Ideas challenge. So I did what any self-respecting lazy procrastinator would do. I combined them into ONE mani! You say cheater, I say genius.

So this one isn't "new" but I tried to make it "improved." I've done a Union Jack (yes, it's a Union Flag unless flown at sea. I know. I watch Doctor Who) mani a few times before here and with a photo tutorial here. But I keep thinking there must be an easier way. I didn't find the easier way, but I did add the smaller red stripes that were missing from the first one and I started with a red base and freehanded the blue and white around it, which was a different method.

And since flags FLY, I snuck this one in to the 40 Great Nail Art Ideas prompt too!

I used Zoya Livingston (sent for review) for the red and then Nails Inc. Tudor Way (purchased by me) for the blue. The white is acrylic paint.

Union Flag Nail Art Tutorial

Union Flag Nail Art Tutorial

Okay, so you guys know I don't really do tutorials because 1) I'm not that great at nail art and 2) I'm certainly not great at remembering how I did something, but I had several requests for a tutorial on my Union Flag/Union Jack nails I did in my Weekend Bits and Bobs post yesterday. And since these are pretty easy, I decided to give it a shot. Please be kind!

As you can tell, I do these free-hand. Tape hates me, but of course if you're friends with tape, it would certainly be more crisp and clean that way.

After I did this, I googled and found that there are a few other tutorials, but I was relieved to find that I seem to be the only one who does the blue first. LOL! Of course. I'm ALWAYS backwards.

But here's my reasoning: It's easier to do the blue first! For me. If I do the white first, then I make a mess trying to do the blue and I have clean up. I don't like clean up!

So I started with Nails Inc. Tudor Way for my blue. Then I used a detail brush for the rest. If I use a different white with a skinnier brush, I use that brush for the white. I used Wet n Wild French White Creme this time. Then for the red, Chanel Dragon, just because it's basically a one-coater and covers easily. The photo above should explain the rest!

And if you're wondering why I call this a Union Flag mani rather than a Union Jack mani, well I blame Doctor Who for that. I learned in The Idiot's Lantern that it's called a Union Flag unless it's flying in the bows of a warship - then it can be called a Union Jack. Of course, both are used officially and either is correct, but I never got past that episode.

This Union Jack mani was my first and I didn't put the smaller red stripes.

So now that you know how easy it is, will you try it? If you've tried it already, do you have a better/different way of doing it?

I like flags. I've done flags. The Scottish Saltire is my favorite to do - it's easy and it IS my favorite country and where I want to live someday. But I've done it more than once - see here.

I'm from Indiana, but have you seen their flag? Too hard. I live in Texas now so a brilliant friend suggested that one.
