Chanel 18 Vamp and 18 Rouge Noir

Nothing to Disclose

Today I have a couple of Chanel polishes to show you that you've probably seen a million times. But they're so gorgeous, what's one more time?

Before I show them to you, just a little explanation of what these two polishes with the same number (18) really are. Vamp, originally, in Europe, was not a shimmer. A few years back, Chanel re-released Vamp in the US but it was NOT the same Vamp - this one had a shimmer. They also released a creme/crelly version in Europe with the same number called Rouge Noir. I have both for you today.

Unfortunately, I don't have the original 90s Vamp to be sure it's the same as Rouge Noir, but I've been told it's the same. I've also been told the original Vamp was a creme though and Rouge Noir is definitely a crelly/jelly formula. So there you go.

Also MOST unfortunately, I don't have Metallic Vamp to show you, which is quite different still from these two. It's a fantastic metallic purple. *sigh* There's also a Rouge Tres Noir  or Very Vamp. All so confusing!

Continued after the jump...

First up, Rouge Noir 18. A squishy, vampy deep blackened burgundy red crelly/jelly. Great formula. I used two coats and no top coat for the photos.

Vamp 18 - This one is a deep berry red creme with a gorgeous shimmer. It's not as visible in indirect natural lighting or shade as it in in the bottle, but it's certainly not hidden and it really shows up in artificial lighting or full sun. Zero issues to report. Formula and application were perfection. I used two coats and one coat of Poshe top coat for the photos.

So what do you think? Do you have any of these? I only have these two "adaptations" of Vamp, but I really wish I had Rouge Tres Noir and Metallic Vamp as well. Regardless, I'm happy with these. Hard to choose a favorite between the two but I've already reached for Rouge Noir more often than Vamp, so I guess that says it. Which is your favorite?

These two are still widely available at Chanel counters, chanel.com and various other e-tailers and they retail currently for $27.00 per bottle. I got mine directly from Chanel.com.

  1. It's so weird - same numbers different names - same name but different numbers LOL

  2. I'll never tire of looking at pictures of Rouge Noir, or of wearing it. It's my favourite polish, ever. I got mine in 1996 and I still love it :D

  4. Love both of these!! Wish I had them. I wonder how the new Vamp compares to Cosmic Violine?

  5. I thought the US Vamp is similar to the European Tulip Noir, which is also a shimmery deep red. Do you know that one?

  6. I had the original Vamp back in the day and it was a creme unlike the current one.

  7. I have the original '90's Vamp- the same bottle from when it first launched and became a sensation. I remember the first time I wore it I was acosted by a female stranger in an elevator! "Is that the new Vamp Chanel color?" She asked while grabbing my hand to inspect my manicure!! I tried to hide my hands from her because my manicure was chipped, but she wouldn't let go. "Don't worry." She said,"It looks even better chipped, all vampy!"

Needless to say, I still remember that 20 years later.

I definitely prefer the newer one, though, with shimmer. The original is practically black with two coats and it's thicker than newer polishes.
