Essie Starry Starry Night - New Version Vs Original: Comparison Request!

Comparison Request
Essie Starry Starry Night: Original vs New Version

So...how close IS the New Essie Starry Starry Night to the Original? Catch me after the jump...

They're not that close. 😒

The new one is still a jelly-ish polish but it's more opaque and a bit um...gooey-er? The glitters are also larger and fewer and because you don't layer as much for opacity, the little glitters that got sandwiched in and appeared blue aren't really there. It's also more royal blue than the original.

Well, you have a look...

This is 2 coats of the new one...

And this is 2 coats of the new one on all but the ring finger which has 3 light coats of the original...

And there ya go! I am not a huge fan of Essie. I have maybe 3 total. Well 4 now with this new SSN version. But the original was, well, original back in the mid-80s. And the formula is good. It's the first "jelly" that I know of and while it does smell a bit stronger than the new one, the formula and wear is good.

The formula on the new one just isn't all that and neither are the larger, sparser glitters.

Yes, I'm disappointed.

I was going to do a new comparison with CbL Twinkle Twinkle Little Star and these two but that one seems to be missing in action at the moment.

Here are the original comparison pics I did of the original SSN and the CbL TTLS.

And the photos I did of the comparison of KBShimmer Carpe Denim and the original Essie SSN...

Edited to add: This morning, after it's 100% dry, I noticed that I can feel the glitters in the new version and the old version is glass-smooth. Same top coat used on both.

And I had a request to see them with a matte top coat...a bit blurry but you get the idea.

What do you think? Will you be searching for the new version of Essie Starry Starry Night?

  1. I got the mini set of the releases but knew from the promo pics they wouldn't be similar. The glitter is a lot larger. The indie versions are clearly a much better option

  2. UMMM WTF??? Damn it. I was afraid of this. I SO do not approve Essie!

    1. Exactly! How could they not get it 99/9% close?

  3. Glad I saw this. I won't be searching out the new one...too many indies out there that are similar enough for me. Thanks for the quick comparison post Sheila!

  4. I like the original SSN a lot better than the new version because the glitters are just too sparse for my liking. As I was on my way to you I took a detour to Facebook and saw that someone just got four of the new version. I'll leave her your comparison link because it's truly helpful.

  5. Well that sucks. I don't like the new one at all. The indie versions look much better. Thanks for the comparison!

  7. I wasnt planning on searching it out, and definitely glad I wasnt. TTLS is enough for me! Essie just can't stand up to a CbL.

  8. I could tell from the promo pics it wasn't the same and I am perfectly happy with my CbL TTLS! Great comparison post!!

  9. I have a couple Essie polishes, and they're not BAD... but they're not the best polish either. I'll stick to the indie blue jelly glitters. (my fave is Pretty Serious Eye of Copernicus. Perfect formula)

  10. Ugh gah! I read that is was thicker and it looked more vibrant. I bought a mini pack so I could compare myself. Why would they re-release if they couldn't get it the same, or better?! Thanks for this post.

  11. I've been super curious when Essie actually originally released SSN. Essie polish posted on their Instagram that it was 1985 and then bloggers got promo stuff from Essie that said 1997. I assumed 1997 was correct because I heard Essie released after the super popular Chanel Night Sky sold out so quickly and that came out in 1994. But you said it came out mid-80's. Totally confused! Haha. Can you tell me more about what you know about its release date? When did you buy your original bottle?

    1. I don't know for sure. All the press releases said 1985 and I am pretty sure I remember it from the mid to late 80s - sometime after I graduated HS. But I don't know for sure.

    2. Although 1997 sounds more probable. But I could swear it was the 80s because I remember thinking blue polish was positively scandalous!

    3. We wore cool color nail polish in the 80's. I was 22 in 1985, clubbed with my forward-fashion post punk gay boys 3-4 nights a week! These polishes came from iNatural at the mall (where is my beautiful pearl/glitter olive green iNatural replacement, polish makers?!) and also all the new cheap-o boutiques popping up all over. And of course, in 1988, neon polish was born.

  12. Thanks for the swatches. Glad it's not the same. Original all the way!

  13. I'll just stick to my Carpe Denim .

  14. So disappointed with this! Won't waste my $$ on the new one. Thanks for the comparison.

  15. Damn you Essie.

And as a true fan of Van Gogh, I weep at the loss of that yellowish greenish starry tinge the old version had - this new formula doesn't even come CLOSE.

Thank you for this awesome comparison.

  16. Thanks for this post, I had been putting off ordering TTLS for a while now and this is the nudge I needed. Lo and behold they had the Might Red Baron in stock, too... one of my other lemmings.

  17. Thank you so much for all the comparisons! I'll stay with my Carpe Denim, at least it's very close in base color to original SSN.

  18. Wow...they really have no business calling it a revival of the original. I called the company after they were bought and changed hands and they told me the "recipe" for SSN was not included with the turn over therefore they would not be making it. 2 years roll by and here we are. Boy did they miss the ball on this. If an Indie brand can get it that beautifully close they could have done so much better.

  19. Aaaargh, I JUST ordered the new version last night! I wish I had seen this first. :( I had no idea the formula was changed. Thank you for such a thorough review and comparison, though!

  21. It's like goop 😔 I'm so disappointed.

  22. The Colors by Llarowe polish is nearly identical. You really can't tell the difference!

  23. Bummer. I guess my night will be filled with twinkling little stars then!
Thanks for the comparison, appreciate it. :-)

  24. Thank you for the Matte photos- I think you can really, really see the difference in the polish with the matte photos. The new version is totally a bummer and I wish they had just done the exact formula over. Don't they keep...recipes (I guess) for the formulas?
